The Incredible Ride from Tibet to Kathmandu

Sunjuli Singh Kunwar

‘Ride on the Roof of the World’ venture proved to be an incredible adventure. This ride which covered about 1000 km commenced from Tibet and concluded in Kathmandu with a great success. The ride on this route is said to be the worlds longest down hill road ride.

The tour had started from the Chinese capital Beijing, from where the team boarded the Himalayan express, the world’s highest railway up to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet and stayed at Lhasa for acclimatization and sightseeing.

On the fifth day the team collected their 500cc Royal Enfield ‘Bullet’ bikes, and started the ride across the Himalayan plateau. Bikers rode along the Friendship highway, driving pass Khambala, at 4794m savoring the majestic views of Yamdrok-Tso Lake and Nazin Klang Sa, standing at 7251m to reach Gyantse for night halt.

From Gyantse, the team reached Shigatse, the second largest city of Tibet that lies at an altitude of 3900m. After visiting the Tashilhunpo Monastery, the team headed towards Shegar. From Shegar the team further rode 68kms to reach Rongbok at 5000m. The excitement reached its peak when they got to see the majestic view of Mount Everest. Ride to the Everest Base Camp was definitely the best part of the entire trip as the riders explained it as a lifetime moment.

Before reaching the Tibet-Nepal border, bikers rode pass Tingri crossing Lalung La Pass at 5124m and Shug La Pass at 5200m amidst the breathtaking views of world’s greatest peaks including Shishapangma, Cho Oyu, Menlungtse and Gauri Shankar. On the tenth day, the team of bikers arrived Kathmandu via the Kodari border

The riders had a great journey as they had to travel across the beautiful terrains, picturesque lakes, astounding landscapes as well as challenging weather as they had to encounter rainfall during their trip which made their trip more exciting and rewarding.

Altogether 31 of them took part in this venture with 29 riders mostly Australians, British, Nepalese and an Indonesian. The riders team was totally supported by vehicle (Toyota Coaster) and all the luggage’s were transported in the bus. On board were experienced mechanics, riders all set to take care of the riders, in case of emergency.

As per Nabin Trital, Executive Manager, Explore Himalaya Travel and Adventure, they received an overwhelming response from the riders who had waited excitedly for this event. He also informed that arrangement on other trips like this is being made. He also informed that this trip is a very remarkable one, as it is the first of its kind in terms of the number of riders who rode on this route. “The size of the team is the biggest one up till now, and we are planning to break our own record by organizing this kind of venture with a bigger size for which preparations are going on,” he informed. He further expressed that the trip was an incredible one but was also tough in terms of logistic support as they had to make various arrangements to make this feat a victory.

The trip was conducted by Explore Himalaya Travel and Adventure in association with Travel Directors, Australia.
